Notes on HT's from Dryden to Jane Austen:

Jane Austen's Values

Intelligence

In her novels characters are either stupid of intelligent. The characters end up in their proper group (Piers Morgan's "Have You Ever Been Properly in Love).

Morality

Morality should eventually become a habit rather than a mental exercise.

Feeling

Learning how to move on after grief and disaster.

Beauty

Three Kinds: Ephemeral, Formal, Mental

Worldly Condition

It is wrong to marry for money and silly to marry without it.

These core values provide substance to the intricate machinations of Jane Austen's comic fictions.
